Legislative updates and expert advice

Dear Unum Sales Partner,

As you navigate COVID-19 response plans, Unum is committed to ensuring both you and your clients have clear, easy-to-understand information about legislation that impacts them and their employees. Providing the best support possible to employees and their families requires a thorough understanding of regulatory changes as they evolve.

Keeping you informed about new legislation

On the federal level, both the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act are now in effect. On the state level, multiple bills have been passed or have made progress that affect disability and paid family leave requirements. Please refer to our COVID-19 legislation web page for more details and updates as the regulatory environment changes.

Helping you understand implications for your clients and their employees

The bills focus on ensuring employees have access to paid leave and sick time while also providing financial assistance to businesses to help pay for such benefits. They will impact businesses on multiple fronts from new qualifying reasons for the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to paid leave requirements and tax credits for smaller businesses. In some cases, state paid leave requirements may overlap with federal aid provided directly to employees, and Unum is ready to account for federal employee assistance in calculating state benefits. For more details on how the bills specifically relate to Unum’s leave services and disability benefits, please refer to our COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions.

Equipping you and your clients with additional resources

We’re also committed to making Unum experts available to you and your clients through new channels and formats. A recent webinar provides a valuable overview of the FFCRA. Our HR Trends podcast has recently featured the FMLA, including the impact of recent COVID-19 legislation on leave requirements. Going forward, we will continue to update these resources as new legislation passes and as best practices, new service approaches and other insights evolve.

Please let us know about specific questions you have and feel free to reach out directly to your closest Unum representative. As always, thank you for allowing us to partner with you to protect your clients, their employees and their families.

Sincerely,

Chris Pyne
